Southside's Campaign to Enhance Understanding of Our Community and Invite Partnership to Build Equity

As Southside Family Nurturing Center celebrates our most recent kindergarten graduates and warmly welcome back returning children and their families to another school year, we’re also excited to announce the launch of our new awareness campaign called We Rise: Breaking Cycles, Building Equity.

The campaign aims to enhance people’s understanding of our south Minneapolis community. It will also identify other Twin Cities neighborhoods that have similar needs to ours, who might benefit from Southside’s holistic, dual-generation, model of nurturing children and families through therapeutic early childhood education and family support and home visiting.

The tragic May murder of George Floyd in our community, along with the intense global spotlight that followed it, has further amplified the trauma that many in our community experience. While the Phillips neighborhood is still hurting and facing many challenges, it is the strength and resilience of our community that inspired Southside leaders to launch this new awareness campaign.

It is our hope that We Rise: Breaking Cycles, Building Equity will help people understand the Phillips neighborhood outside of what they’ve recently read about or seen in the news. We also hope that this campaign can help raise awareness for the important work Southside does to advance health and education equity for families at-risk and that it inspires opportunities for us to expand our footprint to reach other high-need neighborhoods in the Twin Cities.

You are invited to share this campaign with community members and leaders that align with our vision for health and education equity and who may be interested in working together to expand our mission and reach across the Twin Cities in neighborhoods of need. Please reach out to Julie Ellefson at [email protected] to start a conversation.

New Early Autism Intervention

Ignite Child Development Services is excited to partner with SSFNC in our shared mission. Ignite was established by Andy Paulson, Ph.D. in 2020 as a co-located children's mental health program. Our trauma-informed, evidence-based interventions help children's capacity to manage stress and worry, build coping skills, and maintain trusting friendships. A primary focus and specialization is preschool and home-based interventions for children who are presenting with early developmental challenges consistent with autism and behavioral difficulties. We are honored to join the SSFNC team to ignite the development potential of the children we support together.

This summer we are supporting children and families with socially distanced community gardening to aid with healing and stress-reduction. It offers an informal environment to connect authentically with families and fosters health and nutrition.

Thank You to Our Board of Directors!

Southside's Board of Directors not only help guide the organization, they are also generous with their time, skills and resources. They contribute at a high level and also volunteer on the ground by serving and delivering meals, helping with events and with building project.  We are fortunate for their commitment!

In 2020, Gary Wert, went off the board and his role as Chair was filled by Joy Shealer Orson. Joy has served on the Board for 7 years.  Gary has been a tireless advocate, donor, and exceptionally dedicated volunteer with SSFNC.  We know he will continue to contribute his skills to Southside off the Board.

This year we also welcome three new Board members:

  • Cheryl Mosisa PhD, Public Health Nurse with Children's Hospitals.
  • Randy Nelson, Manager at Health Partners
